Getting Started as a Player

schedule 20 min

Prerequisites:

  • None!

Goals:

  • Get Everything Set Up To Play a Campaign Through Hedron

Using Hedron to join an ongoing campaign? No problem!

There’s two things you’ll need to play in a campaign on Hedron: a Character and a Character Sheet.

Something different about Hedron is that we separate Characters and the Sheets you use to look at them.

In a way, you can think of your Character on Hedron as your build, while your Character Sheet is just the way you display it in session. This means that you can build any kind of character and use any kind of sheet with it without having to do any additional effort!

Building a Character

To build a character, head over to the characters page. If you haven’t selected your rule system yet, you’ll see a dialog to select the rule system that you’re interested in.

Once you have a ruleset selected, you’ll see all your available characters – which includes your builds, as well as builds that other users have shared with you.

If you wanted to use one of these characters in a campaign, you should see them in the character selection dialog.

Otherwise, you can also create your own character by clicking the button to “Create A New Character”. When you press that button, you’ll give your new character build a name and a brand-new character will be created.

At first, it’ll be pretty empty. By clicking the edit button in the top right, you’ll be able to walk through the process of creating a character.

Note: Items and Campaign-specific powers are set when you join a campaign. Character Building is only for your "Base build" and irrespective of your Gamemaster's preferences. This lets you re-use your character in many campaigns.

Character Creation

First, you'll see options for your character creation:

In this section, you'll see options to set any Character Fields defined by your Rule System. In this case, that's "Weight", "Height", "Years Old", and "Alignment". In your system, these fields might vary.

After that, you see an area to add any number of Heritages to your Character Build. For some systems, you may only be allowed to add one.

Defining Levels

After character creation, you can begin creating your character build, level by level. Start by adding a level:

As you proceed through level creation, you'll see areas for you to allocate points of various kinds such as this:

In this example, you can see options to add or remove points from "Skills". By hovering over one of these values, you can see how your final value is computed, as well as how much you have "input" into these skills. At the top right of the section, you can also see how many points you have spent out of your total number of points (0 points spent out of 2 total points available), as well as the maximum number of points you can put into any one single stat (1 in this case).

In each of these sections, you can freely allocate and un-allocate points to use up your maximum allotted, which will un-highlight the section — indicating there's nothing else to do here!

Also note: not all point investments are 1:1! This is determined by the Rule System Designer.

After you add your first level, you may also see options for "Initial Input". Depending on your system, this could represent Point Buy, initial skill points, or anything else that is granted to every character at the very beginning. If you don't see this section, your Rule System doesn't have anything like this, so skip this section.

After allocating your points, you'll also see an area to set your class level:

And after you select a class with the dialog that appears, you'll also see the values of your class field and abilities you have gained from your class.

If your class has Spellcasting, you'll also see areas for Spell Casting Sources, which could represent Spell Levels, a Pool of Mana, or other similar ways of casting magic depending on your Rule System. You'll also see an area to set your known spells:

Next, you'll see two last areas for Feats that you are granted, as well as Heritage Abilities given to you by your chosen Heritages; notice, you can manually override these usages to fit your character build (though this may give your Gamemaster a warning to review your character):

Finally, you'll see an area for abilities granted by your Rule System, as well as Bonus Abilities. If for whatever reason, Hedron isn't giving you an ability it should, you can use the Bonus Abilities section at the end of a level to give yourself more abilities (notifying Gamemasters you play with as necessary).

Once you're done with all that, your build is fully defined and ready to play!

But also feel free to keep going and defining more levels.

And don’t worry, you can plan your build ahead to any level you’d like, when you join a campaign, your Gamemaster will set your character’s level. Similarly, any special campaign-specific abilities can be granted by your Gamemaster, as well as Items.

Once you have a character, all you need to do is select a character sheet and join a campaign.

Selecting a Character Sheet

To find character sheets, head over to the Sheets page and take a look at the available character sheets.

By clicking on one, you’ll see its general structure and appearance as it would be in session. But, to get even more specific, you can click the preview button to take a look at how your new character would look like on this character sheet.

Note: You will see placeholders for Items and Spells because your Character doesn't have Items in Preview mode!

You can bring as many character sheets to a session as you’d like! Because it’s all plug-and-play, it just takes a single button click to change your sheet in session!

To add a default character sheet for your character, go back to your Character Editor and add a Default Character Sheet using the designated area:

Joining a Campaign

After your Gamemaster has invited you to join their campaign, you’ll see a notification on your profile page (which you can access from the account icon in the navigation menu).

All you need to do is accept the invitation and select the character you’re bringing to session!

Once you’re in the campaign, your GM will set your character level and then you can join the session view at any time to participate in combat, track your character sheet, use spells, and more!

Happy Playing!
